DO YOU WONDER IF THE TREES ON YOUR

PROPERTY ARE TIMBER-SIZED, OR IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH TO MAKE A SALE?

QUANTITY:   Usually a few trees around a house or scattered over a large area are not enough to make a "timber sale."  However, we have administered sales on properties as small as one acre, providing all of the tract is wooded, and the trees are all large.  Some species are more valuable, like cherry, oak, and walnut, while pines/spruce have very little market value.

TREE SIZE:  The simplest way to determine whether your trees are large enough for a "timber sale" is to cut a piece of string 42" long and go for a walk through your woodlot.  Wrap the string around the trees at chest height.  You don't need to check all of the trees, just use a few as a general guide.  You will learn to quickly decide whether the trees are large enough without measuring them all.  If most of the trees in your woodlot are the circumference of the string or larger it is probably time to ask for assistance with the timber management.

If the trees are generally smaller than the  42" string there are still some management practices which may benefit your woodlot.  If you are truly adventurous and want to learn more about your trees, go to any bookstore and ask for the Peterson's Field Guide series of books, and ask for a book for your region.  These detailed books have color photos, sketches, and excellent descriptions of trees to help you identify the species.
